It evolved from earlier Celtic designs adopted by the Roman army in the 1st century AD. As Rome expanded across Europe, its legions learned about and assimilated foreign armor technologies. Used by legionaries and centurions alike, this style remained in use until the end of the 2nd century AD. The crest—placed side to side or front to back depending on rank or occasion—was usually made of dyed horsehair or feathers and served both practical and ceremonial purposes.
