Gift Crusader Helmet of Olla, 13th Century, 1.6 mm Steel

Crusader helmet with brass fittings, 13th century, 1.6 mm steel

This beautiful high medieval helmet is a fine reproduction of a transitional form of the closed helmet used by the Crusaders/Templars in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. This type of helmet is seen as a precursor or early form of the great helmet, also called kübelhelm or fasshelm (English: big helmet or great helmet or great helmet ).

Unlike its predecessor, which initially consisted only of a flat, cylindrical dome and a mask-like face plate (leaving the sides and back of the head or neck completely unprotected), this transitional model covered the entire head and thus provided better protection. However, in this intermediate form of the crusader helmet, the elongated facial protection extended far beyond the side walls and neck plate. During the course of the 13th century, the crusader helmet was further developed and eventually became a true cylindrical bucket helmet, as can be seen in numerous illustrations and finds known from the Middle Ages. This large helmet completely covered the head, equally on all sides, and was very popular throughout Central Europe.

This replica of a Templar helmet, worn by knights during the Crusades, is based on several historical sources, including a miniature from the Westminster Psalter (ca. 1200–1250, British Library, Royal MS 2 a xxii, f. 220). The helmet is made of 1.6 mm (16 gauge) steel and decorated with a brass cross and crown. The various parts of the knight’s helmet are joined together by steel rivets. The display slots are approximately 8 cm long and 0.7 to 1.8 cm wide and the ten large vertical gaps in the lower half ensure the necessary air circulation.

The interior is blackened and has an adjustable, riveted leather insert. The chin strap, made of 2 mm thick brown leather, is fitted with a brass buckle (antique finish).
