Discover Celtic Helmet 'Port Bei Nidau' Made Of Steel

Celtic port near Nidau steel hull

This celtic/gaulish helmet is based on surviving original examples, the most famous of which is probably the iron helmet from port, near nidau, an almost completely preserved river find that originated in zhil at the village called port (near nidau, switzerland) in the late 19th century) was recovered. Dating from the 1st century bc, the original artifact, dating to around 300 bc, is classified as a helmet from the late la tène period (also known as la tène iii or la tène d ).

The port type helmet comes from eastern Gaul. Characteristic distinguishing features were the round dome, the wide, riveted neck protection, the sunken brow ridges and the cheek flaps. Although this helmet is clearly of Celtic origin and was worn by Gallic warriors, it is believed to have also been used by the Roman ranks in Caesar's Gallic Wars (58–50 BC). This special form of helmet was eventually adopted by the Romans and eventually developed into the so-called Imperial Gallic helmet of the Weisenau type ( Imperial Gallic Weisenau ), the Roman legionary helmet that is considered classical.

This reconstruction of a port-type Gallic helmet with movable cheek flaps is made from 1.2 mm steel. The distinctive neck protection is fixed to the helmet's hood with five round rivets. As the helmet has no integrated liner, it comes with a cotton-padded hood making it comfortable to wear. Small rings on the inside of the cheek flaps also offer the possibility of attaching a chin strap.
