Boeotian Helmet, Greek Helmet Made of Brass, 4th Century BC
Boeotian helmet made of brass, 4th century BC.
This Greek military helmet is reminiscent of a well-preserved helmet dating from the 4th century BC and is based on a bronze find dating from 1854, which was accidentally recovered from the Tigris River in Iraq in 1854. The original artifact, now in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England, is believed to have belonged to a cavalryman in Alexander the Great's Macedonian army.
The name Boeotian helmet comes from the Greek region of Boeotia (or Boeotia), where this type of helmet may have originated. This visorless helmet, which was inspired by a broad-brimmed felt hat called a petasos , was molded from a single piece of sheet bronze. Distinctive features were the round (later conical) dome and the wide, sloping brim with an overhanging front and side folds. This particular helmet form proved ideal for mounted troops because it provided adequate protection for the neck, face, and sides without impairing the hoplites' vision and hearing. Although this helmet was primarily used by the Greeks and Macedonians in classical antiquity and the Hellenistic period, there is evidence that it was also used by cavalry during the Roman Republic.
The Boeotian helmet offered here is made from a single piece of 1.2 mm thick brass. Since the helmet has no integrated lining, it comes with a cotton-padded hood that makes it comfortable to wear. Therefore, this beautiful helmet is ideal for reenactment purposes or for LARP, theater, etc.
