This hood, also called a coiffe or coif , is made from a simple cotton fabric and is worn loosely over the head.



Hoods were already worn in the 12th century, as numerous contemporary illustrations show. In the European Middle Ages, head covering was compulsory, and hoods of the type shown here covered the heads of children, women and men of the lower classes alike. But warriors also wore them (in padded form) under a coat of mail or under a helmet.
