This authentic medieval hood is made of cotton fabric. It has a generous shield and can be tied around the neck with a ribbon. The decorative folds running from the shield not only give the hood a particularly beautiful appearance, but also structure.



In the Middle Ages and early modern times, the bonnet or cap was the headdress of married women, while young girls and unmarried women were allowed to leave their heads uncovered. The expression “going under the bonnet” is derived from this custom. In addition, the cap also had a practical use: protecting the hair from dirt, e.g. at home or when working. Alternative forms of head covering were, for example, veils, bonnets, headbands, scarves or pennants. Throughout Europe, the cap is still an integral part of many traditional costumes.
