Hood with cheek flaps, 1.6 mm steel
Aconite with cheek flaps, medieval helmet, 1.6 mm steel
The monkshood, a rather simple, brimmed hat-shaped helmet, came into fashion in the 13th century and was very popular with foot soldiers, archers, crossbowmen, pikemen and men-at-arms throughout Europe until the 15th century. It owes its English name ( kettle hat ) to its resemblance to a cooking pot (originally called a kettle ).
Although monkshoods existed in many variations, they all had the same key feature: a broad brim that provided protection against sword blows made from above and fired or thrown projectiles without restricting the wearer's vision, hearing, or breathing. This protective design proved advantageous in infantry sieges and mass battles and contributed significantly to the enduring popularity of this type of helmet. The so-called schaller was created as a monk's helmet in the 15th century.
This reconstruction of a late medieval monastery is made of 1.6 mm (16-gauge) steel. The brim is adorned with beads all around, and the helmet cap features four highly decorative cross-shaped clasps. In the overlapping areas, the material thickness is up to over 5 mm. Dark brown leather straps and an antique-finished brass buckle are riveted to the two cheek flaps.
The interior of this helmet is blackened for improved corrosion protection and has a high-quality, riveted, adjustable padded inlay made of black fabric.
This wearable helmet is suitable for light combat, reenactment, LARP, stage, or TV/film. It best suits late medieval settings and is ideal for completing a European warrior's armor. Of course, the medieval helmet is also an excellent addition to any helmet collector's treasure trove.
