Chain mail gaiters, also called chausses , served as leg protection in the late Middle Ages. Plate pieces were often worn over them, so that chain mail armour was only intended to protect the empty areas. In contrast to relatively stiff plate armour, chain mail is much more flexible and adapts much better to the shape of the body. ulfberth® chain mail gaiters are delivered in pairs. They are now available in almost all types of braid. They can be attached individually, with wire, leather nests or cords and/or with leather straps. However, these are not included in the scope of delivery. Another attachment option is to sew them onto existing (leather) trousers.

The FRM braid is a European flat-ring chain braid, which was manufactured and used in various modifications and with different ring diameters from ancient times to the late Middle Ages. It consists exclusively of flat chain rings. The rings and perforated rings are alternately joined together in the 4-in-1 braiding style. This weave was and is less labor-intensive than the fully riveted braid, as only every second ring is riveted. The riveted rings are riveted together using round rivets, resulting in a round, hemispherical rivet head. We abbreviate this authentic braid type FRM, after the English. (= f mixed round rivets.)
