Medieval bruche, natural

These medieval trousers/breeches, called bruche, are made of natural cotton fabric. The waist is cut very wide, which gives the breeches their typical volume. The waist is individually adjusted with a drawstring. The leg warmers with nests can be easily attached to the waist. The inner leg seams have high slits, so the hem can be folded and tucked into the waistband. In summer you can easily shorten the length of the legs.

The bruche was the underpants of the Middle Ages. They were only worn by men and were considered underwear, so they were only available in natural colours. The lower classes also wore them visibly when working in the summer. For leisure, leg warmers and a tunic that reached at least to the thighs were often worn. Towards the end of the Middle Ages, underpants became increasingly tight-fitting until they finally resembled today's underpants. There are numerous depictions of fractures, for example in the Maciejowski Bible and as a sculpture in Reims Cathedral.
