Enjoy Broken Back Sax, Viking Sax Knife, Damascus Steel

Broken back sax, viking knife with damascus blade and wood/bone handle

This handmade Viking sax knife, also called broken back sax due to its special blade shape, has a razor-sharp blade made of 256-layer Damascus steel* and a wood and bone handle with brass ferrule and end cap. The end cap has a handy eyelet for attaching a lanyard or for easily removing the knife from the sheath (a leather strap is included).

The short saxophone comes with a beautiful case made of vegetable-tanned and hand-dyed leather with richly decorated brass fittings. The carrying system consists of two rings, a belt distributor and three leather straps. Carrying systems of this type were widespread in the Viking Age. The belt distributor was used to distribute the individual belts so that the sword or saxophone knife could be worn on the belt at an optimal angle for quick removal from the sheath.

This skramasax is designed as a collector's item or decorative object.

*The term Damascus steel , Damascus steel or simply Damascus refers to a composite steel made from two or more different types of steel. The name is derived from the Syrian city of Damascus, which is considered an ancient stronghold and the origin of Damascus steel production. Typically, a hard, high-carbon steel and a soft, low-carbon steel are joined together by repeated welding and forging. The high-carbon steel provides higher hardness, better hardenability, and increased edge retention, while the softer steel gives the blade greater elasticity and higher resistance to breaking. With this technology, which was developed in a time of poor and changing steel qualities, the positive properties of different steels can be combined. Due to the different colors with different carbon contents, impressive patterns of alternating layers are created, such as the so-called twist Damascus or rose Damascus . Due to these patterns, Damascus swords from the Middle Ages were said to have an inherent magic.

Details:

- Blade material: Damascus steel (4340 and 1070 steel, 256 layers), sharp edge

- Total length: approx. 32cm

- Blade length: approx. 19 cm

- Weight: approx. 230 g (approx. 430 g with case)

- Sheath made of leather and brass with hanger

The above specifications may vary slightly from copy to copy.

The steel used here is not stainless and may show slight signs of corrosion. We recommend taking care of the blade regularly, for example with Ballistol, a universal oil ideal for preserving steel products.

Since bone and wood are natural products, variations in colour and/or grain are quite normal. Therefore, no two handles of this Viking sax are the same and the images above are for illustrative purposes only.
