Discover Viking Bronze Midgard Serpent Brooch
Viking brooch Midgard serpent made of bronze
A Viking Age brooch based on an original discovery of a disc brooch with the Midgard Serpent as decoration.
The midgard serpent , also called jörmungand or world beam, is one of the three germanic mythology enemies of the world, along with hel and fenris. She rests in the depths of the sea and her body is so large that it envelops the entire continent and she carries the tip of her own tail in her throat. When she awakens and the sea is agitated, great floods sweep over the people. At the same time, the snake biting its own tail is an essential symbol of unity and the return of all things. On a spiritual level, it points to deep, hidden forces whose potential emerges in due time and can sometimes be directed and used. During the third encounter with thor at the time of ragnarök , the midgard serpent is slain with his hammer mjölnir.
