Fibulae (or pins) were part of a suit for both women and men. They were mainly used to hold together items of clothing and were later replaced by buttons. But brooches were also used as jewellery or symbol bearers.

The urnes style
... It is the last of the six known styles from the Viking Age, which lasted until the early 19th century. 12th century. Urnes replaced the Ringerike style in the mid-11th century. Filigree and intertwined animal representations characterized the Urnes style. This style is named after a small Norwegian town on the Lustrafjord.
