This beautiful replica of a Viking Age brooch or brooch was made based on an archaeological find from the 9th century. The original piece was found in Birka/Björkö, Sweden and can now be admired at the Historical Museum ( Historiska Museet ) in Stockholm.

This so-called tongue fibula is cast in bronze. The motifs adorning the original artefact were reproduced as faithfully as possible. They show a tree flanked by two intertwined snake creatures. This scene is thought to be a depiction of the snakes Goin and Moin (also Góinn and Móinn ) gnawing at the roots of the world ash tree Yggdrasil (Song-Edda). On the back of the robe clasp is a strong and stable bronze pin for attaching it to the robe.

Although flat, tongue-shaped brooches from the Viking Age have rarely been found to this day, they were probably also part of Viking women's jewellery alongside the better-known shell brooches (also tortoiseshell brooches or humpback brooches) and can brooches. They were usually about 10 cm long and were worn in pairs to fasten the smokkr or changer skirt (strap skirt or apron) to the shoulders, or to secure cloaks and scarves. used. Some of these Viking brooches were also equipped with a ring or an eyelet on which decorative bead necklaces or even small everyday utensils (keys, scissors, etc.) could be hung (the item offered here is delivered without ring or eyelet).

This beautiful piece of jewelry is an excellent example of Old Norse art that will make any early medieval garment look even more authentic.

This is a pair (2 pieces).
