Tarsoly belt bag made of leather, Viking bag based on an original find near Karos, Hungary



This high-quality and beautifully crafted Viking Age tarsoly bag made of 4 mm thick leather is reconstructed from a find in a Hungarian grave. The bag was found in grave number 41 west of the village of Karos, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén. The highlight are the brass applications, which are based on the historical model and make the bag a real gem.



These types of bags are also known from finds at the Viking settlement of Birka in eastern Sweden, which is why they are often referred to as Birka bags . However, in archaeological circles their origins are believed to lie rather with the nomadic equestrian people of the Magyars (today Hungary). These fanny packs probably came from the eastern steppes to Scandinavia via trade between the 8th and 10th centuries. Typical of these Hungarian-style leather bags was their lyre-like shape and the elaborate metal fittings that adorned the front flap.



Due to its historical past, this impressive bag is a great addition to historical reenactment or LARP attire and is equally suitable for depicting Vikings, Magyar steppe riders, Russian, Avar or Slav warriors.
