Birka leather fanny pack, Viking bag based on an original find from Rösta, Sweden

This high-quality and beautifully crafted Viking Age bag, made from 4 mm thick leather, was reconstructed from a grave find in Rösta, Jämtland (Sweden, circa 10th century). The highlight is the brass appliqués, which are based on the historical model and make the bag a true gem.

These bags are also known from finds from the Viking settlement of Birka in eastern Sweden, which is why they are often referred to as Birka bags . In archaeological circles, however, their origins are believed to lie more with the nomadic equestrian people of the Magyars (present-day Hungary). These belt bags probably made their way from the eastern steppes to Scandinavia via trade between the 8th and 10th centuries. Typical of these Hungarian-style leather bags (also called tarsoly ) were their lyre-like shape and the elaborate metal fittings adorning the front flap.

Due to its storied past, this impressive bag is a great addition to historical attire in reenactment or LARP and is equally suitable for portraying Vikings, Magyar steppe riders, Russian warriors, Avars, or Slavs.
