The blackthorn or sloe tree (English blackthorn ) is widespread throughout Ireland and the British Isles. For centuries it was considered a valuable material for making high-quality walking sticks. The original sticks, carved from blackthorn, were the so-called Irish shillelaghs . These traditional weapons of the Irish rural population were between 60 and 120 cm long. Used as a weapon in skilled hands, the shillelagh was so devastating that the British occupiers banned it. The Irish made a walking stick about 90 cm long from their shillelagh and were thus able to circumvent the law. Since a new ban on walking sticks seemed inappropriate, the English let the Irish get away with it. The latter were allowed to keep their modified shillelagh and thus the world received a beautiful and functional walking stick, simply called blackthorn .



Over fifteen years ago, Cold Steel® began an attempt to acquire and distribute real blackthorn. However, this venture proved disappointing: although the sticks sold well, blackthorn is hard to come by and its quality somewhat inconsistent. Cold Steel®'s results, however, have been so impressive that their recent advances in polypropylene product development that they have now produced an injection-molded blackthorn made from polypropylene. All the advantages of real blackthorn are retained, without its disadvantages.



This Irish Blackthorn Walking Stick is inspired by an authentic blackthorn tree in the private collection of Cold Steel® Founder and President Lynn C. Thompson. It was first carefully reproduced in great detail and then artfully modified to look as if it had been taken from the wild. However, this magnificent blackthorn reproduction will never crack, swell, splinter or warp. Care also requires a little soap and water.
