African Walking Stick - Knobkierrie



The Zulus are one of the most militant ethnic groups in South Africa. In the early 19th century, the Zulu king Shaka conquered a large area between the Pongola and Umzimkhulu rivers and laid the foundations of the Zulu nation. At the Battle of Isandhlwana in 1879, the Zulus inflicted one of the most ignominious defeats on the British in history when, fighting with little more than cowhide shields ( isihlangus ) and their short stabbing spears ( assegais ), they annihilated an entire English column of 1,200 men (supported by artillery and cavalry).



The Zulus are characterised by their preference for the so-called knobkierrie (also called simply kerrie ), which is used both as a walking stick and a staff. These hand-made sticks are mostly made from local hardwoods such as wild olive wood, sea buckthorn ( pink ivory ) or the kudu bush, and are topped with a distinctive spherical knob.



The Cold Steel® African Walking Stick adapted for the Western market. It features some of the best features of traditional Zulu Kerries , such as the scalloped shaft and classic geodetic pommel. However, it was made from black polypropylene instead of expensive exotic hardwood. This means that it is not only indestructible but also weather resistant. It will not rot, warp, crack, splinter, swell, shrink, mold or fade. Although primarily designed as a walking stick, it can also serve as a pointer, lever or goad and can even act as a self-defense tool in an emergency.
