Steel scales for lamellar armor, 13mm x 25mm (25 pieces)



Scale armour and lamellar armour are among the oldest forms of plate armour. Both consisted of overlapping plates (lamellae) interlocked in horizontal rows to form a dense pattern reminiscent of the scales of a fish. While scale armour was additionally laced, sewn or riveted onto a stable base made of padded cloth or tough leather, lamellar armour did not need any supporting material.

They were widespread in many cultures and periods and came in a variety of styles, shapes and patterns. The material was diverse, from metals such as iron, steel and bronze to thick, sturdy leather and even horn or ivory.

When well made, this type of armour was almost impervious to blows and stab wounds and also offered particularly good protection against blunt weapons. Scale armour/lamellar armour was popular among warriors in the Middle East, Asia, as well as the Romans and Vikings, and was used well into the Middle Ages.



The set of 25 loose steel scales offered here is the optimal accessory for the discerning re-enactor who wants to build his own scale armour. The scales are perfect for your own DIY projects and also ideal as a replacement or spare for existing armour that you wish to repair, customise or expand.



The small square plates are made of approximately 0.6 mm (23 gauge) steel, have one tapered side and are provided with a central rib and 5 holes. The larger hole allows individual scales to be laced, sewn or riveted to a base, and the smaller holes on the long sides are used to connect the scales together for added stability.
