Austerlitz 1805
The fate of empires
(Campaign 101)

Author: Ian Castle
Illustrator: Christa Hook

Paperback; March 2002; 96 pages

about this book
This new volume narrates the events that culminated on the field of Austerlitz in one of the most famous battles in history. It was not only the first campaign Napoleon undertook as Emperor of France, but also the first major test of his Grande Armée. The Emperor himself considered it his greatest victory, and it undoubtedly earned him a dominance of Europe that would remain unbroken for almost a decade. Until now, most accounts of the campaign have been based almost exclusively on French sources, but after extensive research in the Austrian archives, Ian Castle can now provide a far more balanced account of Austerlitz.

the authors:

Ian Castle is a founding member of the Napoleonic Association and is still heavily involved in its activities both in Britain and continental Europe. He also served for many years on the council of the Victorian Military Society and is currently a consultant to the Anglo-Zulu War Historical Society, involved in the archaeological project working on Zulu War battlefields. Ian began writing over ten years ago and, in addition to contributing numerous articles to military journals, has written ten books, five of which are in the Osprey Campaign series.

Christa Hook began her career as an illustrator in 1986. Her work has appeared widely in publishing and television, and she has established herself as one of Osprey's most popular illustrators. Her illustrations combine a historian's attention to detail with the artist's sense of drama and atmosphere, and are sought after by collectors worldwide. She has had work selected for the Laing Land and Seascape 2000 exhibition at The Mall, and the 2000 Royal Academy exhibition at the Llewellyn Alexander Gallery.
