In the Greek Archaic period, the classical armour of Spartan soldiers consisted essentially of a shield, greaves, a bridled chest and back armour made of bronze and an Illyrian or Corinthian helmet. Occasionally, additional accessories such as shoulder straps or protective plates for the abdomen, thighs, ankles, etc. were also used.

However, in later times the Spartans were often only equipped for battle with a pilos helmet and a purple tunic made of linen (the so-called chiton ). It is often controversial whether Spartan hoplites wore cuirasses at the time of the Persian Wars and if so, what kind: While on the one hand it is assumed that Spartan warriors continued to wear bronze cuirasses that were even more shaped like the pectoral muscles, on the other hand the theory is assumed to be that linen armour (also called linothorax ) had already become established.
