Alexander the Great - History and Legend
By Wolfgang Will
Today there are many images of alexander the great: he is an explorer, explorer, conqueror, bearer of culture, founder of cities, destroyer, blessing and scourge of mankind. According to some, he sought to reconcile west with east, opened access to a new world for europe; according to others, he haphazardly destroyed old cultures and waged a war of conquest without a visible goal. All these ideas are already set forth in the sources. The legend of alexander the great began when he died in the spring of 334 bc bc he set out on his campaign against the persian empire.
Based on important episodes in Alexander's life, such as the journey across the Hellespont, the untying of the Gordian knot, the trip to India, the encounter with the Amazons and the death of the king in Babylon, Wolfgang Will examines the origins and history of Alexander according to various legends.
