Alexander the Great - History and Legend
By Wolfgang Will
Today, there are many images of Alexander the Great: he was an explorer, a conqueror, a bearer of culture, a founder of cities, a destroyer, a blessing, and a scourge of humanity. According to some, he sought to reconcile the West with the East, opening access to a new world for Europe; according to others, he haphazardly destroyed old cultures and waged a war of conquest without a visible goal. All these ideas are already expressed in the sources. The legend of Alexander the Great began when he died in the spring of 334 BC. He embarked on his campaign against the Persian Empire.
Based on important episodes from Alexander's life, such as the voyage across the Hellespont, the untying of the Gordian knot, the journey to India, the encounter with the Amazons, and the death of the king in Babylon, Wolfgang Will examines the origins and history of Alexander according to various legends.
