The medieval man at arms was a brave and loyal fighter full of martial heroism who mastered a variety of weapons with great skill. He was a veteran of countless battles and was often the first to charge into battle. Switzerland has a reputation as a nation of marksmen. This is mainly because men liable for military service are legally required to keep their personal service weapons at home and are allowed to keep them after their service is over, and with the appropriate permit. However, this is a relatively new development. For three hundred years, beginning in the 12th century, the Swiss were greatly feared for the terrible devastation they could wreak on the battlefield with their infamous halberds – the helmbeard effectively combined the best features of the lance, battle axe and hook into one devastating weapon. It could penetrate the strongest steel armour and shatter a sturdy helmet or shield. The “beak” of the helmbeard’s stalk could also be used to tear a heavily armoured knight from his horse so that his brothers in arms could hunt him down.



The Swiss Halberd from Cold Steel® offered here is almost identical to its rugged historical counterpart, but is made from modern materials. The buttstock tip, axe blade and spike (rending hook) are all fully sharpened. This multifaceted weapon can quickly finish off even a heavily armed and armoured opponent.
