Large knitting needle/sewing needle made of bone for bookbinding ( nålebinding )



This sturdy knitting needle/sewing needle made from animal bones is primarily used for bookbinding ( nålebinding ). It differs from modern knitting needles in that it has a hole for threading through. Unlike modern sewing needles, it also has a much wider circumference and the tip of the tying needle is blunt so that it cannot accidentally pierce through the wool thread.



The knitting needle for bookbinding is very suitable for making your own historical garments, such as hats and gloves. The oldest needle finds date back to the Stone Age. Nålebinding is therefore much older than knitting or crocheting and can therefore be considered a precursor to modern craft techniques. Needlebinding finds date back to the early Middle Ages, so textiles from antiquity and the Viking Age, for example, can also be reconstructed.



Unlike knitting, needlework involves working with a single needle. The advantage of this craft technique is that you cannot create continuous stitches because the individual stitches are "knotted" during sewing. When needlework, the thread is also cut for each row of stitches, so this form of needlework is ideal for using up leftover thread. The resulting fabric is also nice, firm and dense.



This bone needle can also be used as a large sewing needle, but only for knitting crafts with wide stitches or elastic threads, otherwise it will not penetrate the material due to the blunt tip and will leave holes in the fabric due to the width of the large sewing needle.
