Acre 1291 - Bloody twilight of the Crusader States
(Campaign 154)

Author: David Nicolle
Illustrator: Graham Turner
Paperback; August 2005; 96 pages

About this book:
In April 1291, a Mamluk army laid siege to Acre, the last great Crusader fortress in the Holy Land. The siege dragged on for six weeks until the Mamluks took the outer wall, which had been breached in several places. Military orders temporarily drove the Mamluks back, but three days later the inner wall was breached. King Henry escaped, but most of the defenders and most of the citizens were killed in the fighting or sold into slavery. The surviving knights fell back into their fortress, holding out for ten days, until the Mamluks broke through. This book describes the dramatic collapse of this great fortress, whose demise marked the end of the Crusades in the Holy Land.

the authors:
Born in 1944, David Nicolle worked in the BBC's Arabic service for several years before gaining an MA from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. He has written numerous books and articles on medieval and Islamic warfare and has been a prolific author of Osprey titles for many years.

Graham Turner is a leading historical artist, specialising in the medieval period. He has illustrated numerous titles for Osprey, covering a wide range of subjects, from the dress of the armies of the 10th century Caliphates, through the action of bloody medieval battles, to the everyday life of late 18th century British Redcoats. Graham, the son of illustrator Michael Turner, lives and works in Buckinghamshire, UK.
