SS Schutzstaffel Dagger, Germany 1933 – A symbol of the darkest history

The Schutzstaffel, known as the SS, developed its own system of military ranks that differed from that used by the Wehrmacht, the NSDAP, and other German state structures. Furthermore, the SS had distinctive insignia and uniforms that reinforced their identity. A curious detail is that many members had their blood type tattooed on the inside of their left arm. Surprisingly, some of these uniforms were designed and made by Hugo Boss, the famous designer who remains a fixture in the world of menswear today.

To consolidate the NSDAP's political power, the SS was given the authority to establish and direct the Sicherheitsdienst (SD), the intelligence and security service, and the Geheime Staatspolizei, better known as the Gestapo, the Nazi state's secret police. This position allowed them to operate above the law and expand their influence throughout Germany and the occupied territories.

Heinrich Himmler and the role of the SS during World War II

Heinrich Himmler, Supreme Leader of the SS, was one of the main architects of the Final Solution. The Einsatzgruppen, mobile SS units, murdered numerous non-combatant civilians in the occupied territories during World War II. The SS was also responsible for the operation and maintenance of concentration and extermination camps, where millions died from mistreatment, forced labor, malnutrition, gas chambers, and medical experiments, much of it futile and cruel. After the war, at the Nuremberg Trials of 1946, the SS was declared a criminal organization guilty of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
