M1928A1 Submachine Gun – The Roar of the “Chicago Typewriter”
The weapon that crossed trenches, streets and legends
The M1928A1 submachine gun , the brainchild of engineer John Taliaferro Thompson , was conceived at the end of World War I , but it was during the turbulent interwar years and World War II that it made its indelible mark on history. Compact, rugged, and powerful, it was the ideal ally both on the front lines and in the dark back alleys of Prohibition.
Officially adopted by the U.S. Army in 1938 , this automatic submachine gun distinguished itself in conflicts such as Korea and Vietnam , and became an icon of urban combat during Prohibition . Chambered in .45 ACP , its high rate of fire and firepower made it feared by its enemies and revered by those who wielded it. Its 20-round straight magazine and the legendary 100- round drum magazine were synonymous with authority... or chaos.
The Instrument of Crime and War
The M1928A1 was much more than a combat weapon: it was a symbol of an era. In the hands of elite soldiers , FBI agents , or legendary gangsters , it was nicknamed the "Trench Broom," the "Chicago Typewriter," or simply "The Chopper." Its silhouette, immortalized in period films, novels, and short stories, has become part of the imagination of an entire generation.
Today, this impressive non-functional replica, crafted in Spain from high-quality wood and metal , brings that legend back to life. Measuring 82 cm in length, this piece evokes the roar of steel that dominated both the battlefields and the streets of Chicago.
