Life in a Roman Camp: Organization, Routine and Reality

When we think of the Roman army, we often imagine glorious battles, well-trained legionaries, and impressive conquests. But behind Rome's military might lay a perfectly organized machine: the Roman camps ( castra ), veritable temporary and sometimes permanent cities that reflected the discipline and efficiency of the Empire.

Camp structure: Order and functionality

Roman camps were not improvised. According to the Greek historian Polybius , each camp was built according to a standard design, almost like a miniature city. Its shape was rectangular , with well-laid-out streets and designated areas for each unit.

The most notable elements were:

  • Via Principalis and Via Praetoria : main streets that connected the gates of the camp.

  • Praetorium : the tent or headquarters of the commander (general).

  • Principia : administrative headquarters, where standards, archives and treasures were kept.

  • Valetudinarium : military hospital.

  • Factory : workshop for repairing weapons and manufacturing equipment.

  • Barracks ( contubernia ): compartments where the soldiers slept (8 per tent or room).

  • Latrines , wells and pipes: they demonstrated a high level of knowledge of hygiene.

Legionnaire's daily routine

Life in the camp was as disciplined as on the battlefield . A typical day included:

  • Alba : training and distribution of tasks.

  • Training : hand-to-hand combat, pila (javelin) throwing, marches of up to 30 km with full armament.

  • Construction or maintenance : repair of walls, ditches, roads or bridges.

  • Guards : continuous surveillance at the towers, gates and perimeter.

  • Food : a diet based on bread ( panis ), porridge ( puls ), legumes, and watered wine. Meat was occasional.

  • Leisure : dice games, writing, reading, or writing letters home. Some camps even had small amphitheaters.

Temporary vs. permanent camps

During military campaigns, camps were built at the end of each day . A ditch ( fossa ) was dug, a palisade ( vallum ) was erected, and within a few hours a defensive enclosure was erected. This practice reinforced discipline and nighttime security.

But many camps became permanent settlements , especially on the borders of the empire, such as in Germania or Britannia. Famous examples include:

  • Vindolanda (United Kingdom): where wax tablets containing personal letters from soldiers were found.

  • Carnuntum (Austria): a camp-town with thermal baths and theatres.

  • Legio (Spain) : in León, a camp that gave rise to the current city.

Real Testimonies: The Vindolanda Tablets

One of the most fascinating discoveries about camp life is the Vindolanda Tablets , discovered near Hadrian's Wall. These small wooden tablets contain writings from the soldiers and their families. Some poignant examples include:

  • Birthday party invitations.

  • Complaints about the cold and the food.

  • Orders for underwear to Rome.

These documents show that the soldiers were ordinary people, with fears, needs and desires.

Not just soldiers

Although officially only soldiers were allowed to live in the camps, in practice many were accompanied by:

  • Wives and children (unofficially) .

  • Merchants who offered goods and services.

  • Slaves who performed domestic tasks or assisted with logistics.

Often, outside the walls of the camp, vici were formed, small villages that served as economic and human support for the military camp.

Much more than war

Roman camps were fundamental to the expansion and maintenance of the Empire. They were centers of logistics, training, government, and coexistence. Beyond their military function, they represent one of the greatest expressions of urban organization, discipline, and daily life in the ancient world.
