Excalibur is the legendary sword of King Arthur, sometimes attributed with magical powers or associated with the legitimate sovereignty of Great Britain. The sword was associated very early with Arthurian legend. In Welsh the sword is called caledfwlch , in Cornish calesvol , in Breton kaledvoulch and in Latin caliburnus .

The history and legend of King Arthur is closely linked to this magical and mysterious sword. As Merlin the wizard had proclaimed, only he who could pull the sword from the stone would be king. Arthur knelt before the stone, performed this act, took the sword, entered the cathedral with it and sacrificed it on the altar. He was anointed with the holy oil and solemnly swore, in the presence of all the barons and common people, to be a just king and to defend truth and justice for all the days of his life. Legend and history have intertwined over time, and the legend of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table and the magic sword Excalibur have become intertwined along the way.
